The UK's first ever triple certified instant coffee has hit North West shelves this month as more shoppers than ever before demand ethically sourced coffee. Developed in the North West by Aimia Foods, Café Nueva Triple Certified is not only organic, but it is also approved by Fairtrade and the Rainforest Alliance.

"Today's consumers are now increasingly aware of the social and environmental impacts of the products they buy. With 23 per cent of total instant coffee sales now Fairtrade*, and statements such as ‘I like to buy from companies who give back to society' and ‘I only buy from companies with good ethics' becoming standard, it's safe to say that consumers want to see companies give their suppliers, and the environment, a fair deal," said Martin Armitt, marketing controller at Aimia Foods.

However, shopping for ethical products, particularly coffee isn't that easy. A recent survey** by Aimia Foods revealed that 68 per cent of consumers are confused about the number of fair trade and ethical certification schemes out there. Shoppers are often faced with a vast array of labels, such as organic, Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance, without much explanation of what's behind the label or the differences between them.
