Cheshire boy returns to his roots

Xternal Dimensions, the award winning garden, patio and driveway design company, is bringing its creativity to Cheshire. This Summer will see the opening of its latest garden display centre in Ollerton near Knutsford.

Delivering a complete service from initial consultation through to build, the company has transformed hundreds of gardens, patios and driveways of all shapes and sizes, from balconies and tiny town gardens to country houses and new home developments. Its wide ranging projects incorporate both traditional and contemporary styles with prices starting from £3500 upwards.

Xternal Dimensions has been a regular exhibitor in recent years at the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Show held at Tatton Park each Summer and was RHS Silver Medal winner in 2003. This year's show will follow close on the heels of the launch of the new garden design centre, so will provide a real showcase for its work.

For managing director, Nick Williams, the launch of the Cheshire centre marks a return to old haunts as he was born and brought up in Sandiway. He spent much of his time working at Tatton Park during holidays and major shows which is where he originally cultivated his passion for gardening and design. Nick comments: "We founded Xternal Dimensions in 1999 to provide a 'one-stop-shop' for the design
and construction of people's ideal gardens, patios and driveways. Since then it has gone from strength to strength.

This is our third design centre and we have a team of over 50 people - from designers through to construction teams. Our clients are extremely varied but all of them look for a highly customised and personal solution to their garden or driveway design need. Knowing the area so well, Knutsford seemedthe obvious choice for our new centre and we're looking forward to adding creativity to gardens
throughout Cheshire."

However, it's not just Nick who has an entrepreneurial streak in the Williams family. His mother, Eunice, owned and ran a well-known shop in Knutsford and anyone who lived or worked in the town prior to 1995 would instantly recognise the name Janet's.

The wool and haberdashery shop was a firm feature on Princess Street for the majority of the 1900s. For many years it was a family run business and was handed down from mother to daughter. In 1971 Phyllis and Celia Blake sold the shop onto Eunice. She decided to retain the name that it had been given by its original owner. And it would be a further 25 years before Eunice parted with the shop to enter retirement.
Eunice comments: "Janet's was an institution in Knutsford. We had a host of regular customers who called in for wool and craft supplies over the course of many years. It's now eight years since I retired and sold the shop. I'm thrilled that Nick has decided to bring his business to Knutsford - quite literally coming back to his roots."
