Horticultural Heaven at the RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park
This summer, garden lovers in Cheshire will be treated to an abundance of horticultural delights at the RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park, as the show celebrates its tenth birthday. The show takes place from 23-27 July.
The grand finale of the RHS summer shows calendar will see both fresh horticultural talent and veteran designers present a mix of ideas to optimise use of outdoor space. There will also be show stopping flower beds, and truly spectacular floristry displays as the search goes on for Britain's best talent.
Gardens with an international feel include Jing Cheng's ‘Mandarin Retreat Show Garden' which is a Chinese courtyard garden with a pagoda and fishpond surrounded by lush planting. Whereas ‘Hot Dry Days' designed by Clive Mollart, and Candy O'Connell and Karen Calnon's ‘Cheshire Al Fresco', will both take inspiration from the Mediterranean.
Visitors will also witness innovative gardens spanning a huge range of styles and themes from NACRO's leisurely ‘Ladies that lunch' garden to Dragonfly Garden Design's ‘Punks Not Dead', a show garden that will bring teenage angst to life.
The ever-popular RHS/Ball Colegrave National Flower Bed Competition will return to the show, with entries including Vale Royal Borough Council's Psychedelic 60's Yellow Submarine flower bed celebrates 40 years since the famous Beatles film was released; Cheltenham In Bloom's helicopter tribute to the rescue services who worked so hard during last year's floods; and Newcastle-under-Lyme's floral crusader tank remembering local hero Fred Kite.
For the first time, in this anniversary year, the British Florist Association Marquee will play host to the finals of both the UK Skills Competition, in conjunction with Lantra, and the Teleflorists ‘Florist of the Year Competition'. These competitions provide visitors with a great opportunity to see some of the countries best young floristry talent.
RHS show manager for Tatton Park, Kris Hulewicz, says:
"The show has come a long way in ten years with a definite move towards more experimental designs and planting.
"This milestone year for Tatton is the perfect opportunity to expand on the show's success by welcoming fresh horticultural talent, launching new community initiatives and attracting a wider range of gardening enthusiasts of all ages and skills levels with an animated learning and skills programme and ample shopping opportunities."
Creativity is not confined to the gardens at this year's anniversary show, as art and sculpture will have a strong presence. There will even be some surprise installations throughout the week as Tatton plays a pivotal role in the wider Cheshire Year of Gardens '08 celebrations.
